ECU/ECM Repair - Nissan
The Engine Control Module (ECM) or Engine Control Unit (ECU) is the main engine computer that processes and controls all engine operations. Control such as injector timing, ignition modules, and idle are all handled by the ECU. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) processed by the OBDII port identify issues with malfunctioning sensors or components, although occasionally the ECU itself develops problems.
The following Nissan vehicles are supported for ECU repair :
2000-2003 Nissan / Infinity
The typical ECU failure for these model occurs when there is a terminal failure of the Idle Air Control Valve (IACV), which then leads to a failure of the ECU. Symptoms of an ECU failure are :
- Reading of a DTC of P0505, especially after replacement of the IACV
- No start, hard start, engine stall, rough/high/erratic idle
When experiencing these types of symptoms, first check the usual sensors that could trigger these symptoms, such as :
- Front Crank Position Sensor (REF)
- Rear Crank Position Sensor (POS)
- Camshaft Position Sensor (PHASE)
- Idle Air Control Valve (IACV)
- Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
When these and all other vital engine sensors are verified to be operating correctly, a malfunctioning ECU may be the culprit. A repair of the ECU for this type of failure must always be accompanied with a parallel replacement or verification of the IACV and the PS, otherwise failure may re-occur! When sending in the ECU, include the IACV and TPS, and we can bench test these components aswell.
